Upcoming Talk

I’m giving a talk next Monday, December 5th, at 6 PM in West Hall, Room 112. Here’s what I’ll be talking about:

Contemporary Composers in the Sacred Harp Tradition

Sacred Harp singing is an active four part community singing tradition that dates back to the 18th century. Through talking with contemporary composers in this tradition, Jesse, himself a singer and composer of Sacred Harp tunes, is unveiling the wide-ranging concerns, motivations, and techniques of these present-day tunesmiths.

Jesse is in the early stages of planning a CD project pairing never-before sung Sacred Harp music written by the composers involved in the project with work by these same composers inspired by, yet outside of, the Sacred Harp tradition. Jesse is also working on a show and a DVD documenting the work of these composers.
